I set initial timing to 16 and total at 3500rpm to 38 both with vacuum disconnected and plugged then I reconnected vacuum advance and engine at idle was 38 deg. and held motor at 3500 rpm timing went up to past 50 my balancer is only marked to 50 deg. the next mark is 90 deg. It won't hurt to disconnect, as long as idle speed is correct. Initial timing is always set with no vacuum advance, the only reason to disconnect the hose would be if it's not on a ported vacuum source.
