WebThe Spanish Peaks are unique because they were not formed in the same way that the faulted and uplifted Sangre de Cristo Mountains were. They are prime examples of “stocks,” which are large masses of igneous (molten) rock, that intruded layers of sedimentary rock and were later exposed by erosion. WebThis is a panorama of the fold and Spanish Peaks fold and fault east of Big Sky. Big Sky is off to the left. The cliffs up high are steeply tilted Mississippian limestone. The bedrock in most of Big Sky is Cretaceous sandstone, siltstone, and shale. It was deposited just east of a major mountain range we refer to as the Sevier mountains.
