In 1584, as her marriage to Talbot effectively ended, she set about turning the ramshackle, medieval manor house she was born in into an Elizabethan treasure. Sited on a hilltop between Chesterfield and Mansfield, overlooking the Derbyshire countryside, Hardwick Hall was designed by Robert Smythson in the late 16th century.
