Dysferlinopathies
WebDec 4, 2024 · Background. Dysferlinopathies are autosomal recessive muscular dystrophies resulting from defects in DYSF (MIM: 603009), which is located on chromosome 2p13 and encodes the dysferlin protein.. Methods. We performed exome sequencing and subsequent trio-based analysis in a family with dysferlinopathy. WebNormal Function The DYSF gene provides instructions for making a protein called dysferlin. This protein is found in the thin membrane called the sarcolemma that surrounds muscle fibers. Dysferlin is thought to aid in repairing the sarcolemma when it becomes damaged or torn due to muscle strain.

All dysferlinopathies are caused by pathogenic variations (mutations) in the DYSF gene which result in a deficiency of the protein dysferlin (hence, the name), important for the efficient repair of muscle fibers. Inheritance is autosomal recessive. There is no cure or specific treatment.
