Might consider putting a few fish back in your mom's tank temporarily,and borrowing some filter material from her tank if it has been running with fish longer than a couple month's. I dropped three very teeny tiny snails in their tank before *breakfast* so I know they were hungry. One loach came up to a snail, lifted it up with his snout, tossed it, but then he just swam away.
